Integrated Pest Management and Phytophthora Control in Ornamentals Production
The AGEXPORT Commission for
Ornamental Plants, Foliage and Flowers represents a group of 50 companies that
produce and export more than 500 species and 3,000 varieties of plants.
Generating around 15 thousand jobs, where 80% of them are from women in rural
areas, contributing to the development of Guatemalan agriculture, providing
better opportunities for families in rural areas and in general for the
development of the country.
The Farmer-to-Farmer program
provides technical assistance to the commission through the support of the
volunteers who visit the farms to provide direct support and through
theoretical training at the AGEXPORT facilities.
In
December 2019, the commission received the visit of two experts, volunteers
from the Farmer-to-Farmer program; Lewis Kamiri, Phytophthora Control expert graduated
from Michigan State University and Surendra Dara, Entomology and Biologicals expert
and Affiliated IPM Advisor from the University of California Cooperative
Extension, Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources, both US citizens.
During the visit, the experts were able to visit seven farms of the commission, providing direct technical assistance in order to recommend improvements to protocols for the management of pests and diseases. Listening to precise queries and offering possible solutions to evaluate in each of the farms.
During the last week of the assignment, the volunteers provided technical training at the AGEXPORT facilities. Where 29 people from the different farms visited participated.
These efforts of the Farmer-to-Farmer program, in conjunction with the Ornamentals Commission, help to improve the quality of the crops obtained, at the same time offering more environmentally friendly solutions and taking care of the health of the collaborators when employing agricultural practices.
