A volunteer of the Farmer to Farmer program, supported APEDI in November – 2021!

Ms. Melissa Delzio, a volunteer of the Farmer to Farmer program, she supported APEDI in November – 2021. A little about Ms. Delzio, she is an independent Designer/Art Director, expert in Adobe InDesign CC, Illustrator CC, and Photoshop CC software; skilled in fine art, hand-drawing, and illustration work. She traveled to the Dominican Republic to work with APEDI’s Association on the design of a textbook/manual all about environmental conservation as it relates to the watershed.

APEDI is an association that promotes community development and water generation in the Yaque del Norte river basin. It is part of the Association's decision to promote initiatives and projects on water quality. APEDI has a division called FONDO AGUA YAQUE. The goal of Fondo Agua Yaque is to guarantee access to water for all individuals who depend on the Yaque del Norte watershed, with a focus on the upper watershed, which directly and indirectly affects two million people. Plan Yaque works in the following four areas: water quality; natural resource management; improvement solid waste and water management.

The objective of this assignment was to design a Manual or textbook about the Water Basin and environmental health that could be used by APEDI to help advocate for better water/land management practices. There was a focus on climate resilience and water usage/quality. She designed the manual so that it could be printed or delivered by PDF and that each Chapter could be printed or delivered by PDF on its own. APEDI reviewed the design options that she had created in advance of the assignment and went over the timeline and exceptions and general scope of work.

Ms. Delzio achieved setting up templates, determining design styles, color specs and font selections and completing of the designed chapters. One of the recommendations given is that the document needs to be reviewed by the original author and/or a local scientist; after a year of year of use, APEDI should evaluate the document’s effectiveness, and re-evaluate content.

“I loved exploring the Dominican Republic,” she said, “with the support of Franqui Linarez, Farmer to Farmer field officer, and our host APEDI, Saul Abreu, Walkiria, Rabea and Laura, and on my own.” She continued, “The host, APEDI, was very generous with time and knowledge about the culture and history”
