Teaching Farm Business Management to Vegetable Producers in Guyana

Dr. Harold Lynn Beck traveled to Guyana for two weeks in September 2019 to train farmers from four producer groups on farm business management. Dr. Beck holds a Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics from the University of Missouri and works as a lead instructor in the School of Business at Southern Illinois University.

The volunteer visited various regions in Guyana and gained an insight of vegetable production at various scales and through different methods such as hydroponics, field, and elevated and on the ground seedbeds. During his first visit to each farm, he recorded their costs of production. Once he had that information, he created a computer simulation model in Excel to estimate the farmers’ costs, that would accommodate the different production systems.

He then met with each group of farmers again, to show them the results and train them to use the model. To start the producers on the road to record-keeping, he also designed three forms for them to collect data. They can then summarize the data in these forms to calculate their costs, revenue, and profit; which they need to make management decisions.

At the end of Dr. Beck’s assignment, 30 shade house vegetable producers from Regions 3, 4, 5 and 10 had learned about budgets, costs, returns, profitability, crop scheduling, and other relevant business techniques. These growers will now be able to track their activities and calculate their cost and returns per month/year for each one of their products.

When talking about his assignment, Dr. Beck commented: “I was deeply impressed as to how different these small farmers were compared to the small farmers I have worked with in other countries. They appear to be much more educated, more aware of costs, and the nuances of vegetable production and marketing. With basic guidance and access to managerial tools, these producers can turn their operations into more profitable enterprises and may soon become larger farmers with a much higher standard of living.”
